Art Therapy

Art Therapy combines psychotherapy and the creative process. Using colour, imagery and shapes, self-exploration and understanding can be facilitated, and emotions and thoughts can be communicated in new and different ways. Bringing emotions, thoughts, memories, and experiences outside of ourselves by expressing them in a tangible, physical form, we are able to view, explore and reflect on them in a new way, which can help to provide deeper insight.

Art therapy is accessible and addresses a variety of concerns for nearly any population; it does not require any knowledge of art-making or any artistic skill. It can be used to foster self-esteem and self-awareness, enhance emotional identification and resilience, strengthen social skills, find creative ways to solve problems, reduce conflict and communication struggles, process trauma, and advance change towards clients’ personal goals.

There is a place for everyone in art therapy, as we all have the potential for expressing ourselves creatively. In our work together we may draw, paint, work with clay, build things, create a comic book, look at pictures, visualize images, listen to music, knit, write, or talk – the options are endless and completely unique to you. Art can provide a language to describe feelings, thoughts and life experiences that are hard to put into words. The act of creation can also be deeply relaxing and calming, which can help to ease conversation and bring a sense of comfort to the therapy space.
