Children’s Therapy

Much of children’s therapy is done through play-based work and viewed through the lens of attachment. Creativity and play tend to be the language of children. Our therapists often engage these modalities in a variety of ways. Play-based therapy and art therapy use a variety of toys, tools, sensory experiences, and creative modes of expression to connect with kids. Through play and creativity, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behaviour, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others. Play is used to help kids express emotions they may not have the words for yet, build confidence, practice regulation, and much more.

Children’s therapy is tailored to each child, however there are typically elements of the therapeutic space transitioning between being child-led and being therapist-led. Sometimes it’s important (and part of the process) to let the child decide how they want to play, engage, and take up space in the room. Sometimes it’s important for the therapist to be more directive and structured with the child’s session, while still allowing space for the child to make decisions and have agency.

Work with children is very individualized and takes into account the unique strengths and preferences of each kiddo. Our therapists connect with both the child and caregivers to ensure clear goals and direction for therapy. Often parents need help to be better parents, too! We work in a comprehensive, family-focused approach with the intention to support not only the child as an individual, but also as a part of their larger network of family and community.
